Coin Divers, Before Dusk
Aboard a ferry, in the Calapan Pier in Mindoro:
- An older diver patiently waits for spectators to throw some coins.
- A team of 5 divers
- A child managed to climb the ferry. He checks below before diving.
- Emerging from the deep (from a successful catch?)
- A happy young coin diver
- “Look!”
- Experienced divers
- The child on the right implores spectators to “Hagis!” – “Throw!” – some coins
- They climb the ferry via a rope that ties it to the port.
- They climb, they dive, and climb again.
- “Throw some coins”
- Rest
- Another team
- Spectators
- Away he goes.
- It’s somewhat a serious competition. It’s livelihood after all.
- Ready
- Somewhat a frenzy.
- A leader and his young divers.
- Rest
- A young one waits, asks people to throw some coin with his eyes
- The boat moves, and they ask the spectators one last time.
- Racing for the last few coins until the next ferry.
- Divers and their work place.
